August 25, 2007 - The Nuts and Bolts chapter had a Club Meeting at the Locke’s home in the Hickory area of Chesapeake. Wil Best drove his 1979 Pontiac LeMans over to join the Locke’s 1935 Lincoln, 58 Cadillac Derham, and 1963 Corvair convertible along with Andy Ott’s 1923 Ford Model “T” Coupe, Terry Bond’s 1973 MGBGT, and Mickey McChesney’s 1968 Oldsmobile. This little car show got lots of waves and honks from passers-by.

After looking over the cars we did some diagnostic work on Wil Best’s brake system. Then we had a talk from a guest, Bob Gerlinger, who grew up in an automobile family in Dearborn, MI. Bob told us about his uncle who was a research engineer with Cadillac in the 20s to the 50’s, and about his own experience working on the Plymouth assembly line in 1950 until the Union said, “join or get out”. It was only a summer job so he got out. Next time Bob will talk about his four brothers who worked for Ford.

After dismantling a couple of pizzas Andy Ott then reviewed various measuring devices, such as micrometers. We then measured the crank and block of the 351” Cleveland and determined that they needed to visit a machine shop as the next step. Then it was time to drive some cars. Ethan Hoar had never driven a Model “T” so he got to drive Andy’s ‘23 Coupe and then Dani, who loves Cadillacs, got to drive the ‘58 Cadillac Derham. Then it was election time because Jacob Moyer (Virginia Tech) and Jamie Smith (US Merchant Marine Academy) are already at College. Elected were Gordon Womack President, Wil Best VP, and Dani Lechner Secretary/Treasurer.

It was extremely hot so attendance was a little light but attending were: Wil Best, Dani Lechner, Gordon Womack, and Cory & Ethan Grimm.  Before everyone departed the Club Members divided up four stacks of Chevy and Hot Rod magazines donated by Mickey McChesney. Thanks Mickey.

June 2, 2007 - On June 2nd the Nuts and Bolts Club was again the guests of the Colonial Region of the Classic Car Club of America’s Annual Picnic. The picnic was again at the James River home of Reggie & Cindi Nash just west of Richmond. Twelve Club Members and a few guests made the trip in Jeff & Pat’s 35 Lincoln V-12 (Andy Ott at the wheel), Jeff’s yellow Corvair convertible, Skip Patnode’s 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto convertible, and in Pat’s Oldsmobile.

Jumpin n” Jivin on the James were: Jake & Katie Moyer, Will & Walt Best, Jamie Smith, Gordon Womack, Jay Twiford, Chad McNeil, Josh & Zack Grimm, and new members Andy Barnett and Jessica Cervantes. There was swimming, boating, a game of touch football, and, of course, riding in and driving antique cars. Several got to ride in Reggie Nash’s newest toy, a 1904 Rambler, as well as his 1909 Rambler, Cindi Nash’s 1965 Mustang and 1972 Firebird, and Jeff’s Corvair.

Wil Best earned to drive a stick in Jeff’s Corvair while Jake took groups for rides around the neighborhood in the Mustang convertible. Chad fell in love driving the Firebird. And everyone got to drive Reggie’s 1911 Ford Model “T” Touring. Jessica Cervantes had to sit on the front edge of the seat in order to reach the three pedals while operating the two-levers on the steering column but she got the knack of it almost immediately and snuck back into it every time she could.

A fantastic bar-b-que meal was catered by Richmond AACA members Morris & Alice Cameron. The Nuts n’ Bolts Chapter wishes to express its heart-felt appreciation to the Colonial Region CCCA and to Reggie & Cindi Nash.

July 9, 2006 - First Annual Nuts and Bolts Picnic - Tidewater Region's new youth group held its first annual picnic at the home of co-founders Jeff and Pat Locke as a social gathering for members, parents, and youth member sponsors.  The Nuts and Bolts chapter is a first for AACA - the actual charter is up for approval this week.  It is intended to encourage kids too young for normal membership to learn about and participate in the old car hobby.  Jeff Locke, Terry Bond, and Mickey McChesney all spoke briefly to encourage participation by both parents and youth members, and sponsor Andy Ott presented a program on getting into the hobby and examples of skills used in restoring cars.
