Indianapolis Motor Speedway
|
|
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was conceived in 1908 by Carl Fisher,
who was also the co-owner of Prest-O-Lite. |
 |
The first race at Indianapolis Speedway did not involve cars. Was it a
race for hoses, balloons, or motorcycles? |
 |
Balloons, in June of 1908. The first car race wasn't until two months
later and the Speedway almost died after the 1st racing program. The tar
and gravel track broke up under the terrific pounding and resulted in
numerous accidents. The circuit was then paved with 3.2 million bricks -
thus earning the nickname the Brickyard. |
