The registration of automobiles in North Carolina began July 1, 1909. The
State issued only the number to be used and a registration certificate.
The actual license plate had to be made by the owner himself. The material
used to be used was not specified and neither was the size of the plate,
but the number on the plate had to in Arabic and at least 3" high. They
had to be of opposite color on black or white, the arrangement being the
choice of the owner. (read
